Cats and Sleep

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten a full 8 hours of sleep. This is mostly due to this wild beast named Gracie, who decides in the middle of the night that my chest is her bed, and the bathroom is for her to practice her singing lessons. She may look innocent, with those delicate pink paws, huge bright blue eyes, and the kiss of an angel. But the minute the lights go off, this tiny, 7 lbs creature, turns into a lion that’s on the prowl. Oh yes, pouncing, kneeding, howling at the moon, or whatever she’s talking to. I’ve often times thought about putting her in a soundproof bubble, but I don’t think that would be very nice of me.

So instead, I’ve decided to feed her a full meal close to bedtime, wake her up throughout the day to give her kisses and hugs (as I feel that’s only fair), and play with her right before I go to sleep. So far, so good. We’ll see how long this lasts until she starts catching on to my little plan.

You just can’t help but love them through the thick and thin, the sleep and no sleep.

My Animal Rescue Volunteer Experience

Today I volunteered for a few hours at an animal rescue organization, Sara’s Sanctuary.

It was an extremely fun, knowledgeable and fulfilling experience. Sara’s Sanctuary takes on animals that have been injured, abused, and/or need special attention. She has quite the mix of animals, and has set up some really great, protected homes for them.

Emu’s… strange but curious birds. I’ve never had an emu try to mate with me before. Apparently it was mating season, and I was the catch of the day. I’m engaged, and you’re a tab bit hairy for my type. Sorry guys!

Sara’s Sanctuary, along with other animal rescue organizations, could really use your help not only with cleaning, but marketing, photos, events, plumbing, etc. The list goes on and on, so if you have an area that you specialize in, definitely don’t hesitate to contact these organizations. They will welcome you with open arms.

Recommended Brands of Food For Your Pet

Now that Halloween is over and I have food on my mind (thank you Thanksgiving!), I figured I would share a little research that I’ve been reading up on regarding quality pet food.

Food choices are plentiful in the stores and sometimes overwhelming, so I’ve gathered a list of the top 4 best reviewed food products according to “Consumersearch.com.”

The following lists give you an idea of what to look for when shopping for your furry friend!

For Dogs:

1. Change dog foods periodically, and alternate between dry dog food and canned food.

2. Look for certification by the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials).

3. Choose a food that has whole meat or whole meat meal (lamb meal, chicken meal, etc.) as its top ingredients.

4. Avoid BHT, BHA and ethoxyquin as preservatives. Grain sources should also be whole grains, as opposed to glutens or other processed products. Rice and barley is better than corn or wheat. Avoid meat by-products and meat and bone meals.

5. Observe your dog carefully when trying a new food. Some dogs need more protein and some need less, just as some dogs need to eat more than others, depending on activity level. Look for changes in coat and skin, along with stool consistency.

6. Pet food safety is a growing concern. It is a good idea to keep a watchful eye on any food recalls, as this has been a more common problem with cat food recently. The Food and Drug Administration and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals websites are a good place to start.

For Cats:

1. Look for more meat in the list of ingredients and less by-product, grain and vegetable products.

2. Choose foods without dyes or artificial preservatives.

3. Balance canned food and dry food.

4. Read the label. The best products avoid the use of grains like corn, wheat or soy and don’t include animal by-products. If cost, availability or your cat’s preferences are an issue, try to stick with a food that minimizes such ingredients and lists them further down the ingredient list.

5. Pet food safety is a growing concern. (See dogs)

Does this all sound oddly familiar? It should – Just as you try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, your pets should to. It’s so important for them to live a long, healthy, happy life, and the food they are given affects this 100%.

One LONG tongue!

Finding a Pet Sitter: A Few Tips.

I’ve been doing some major research on pet sitting as I’m going to begin my pet sitting (and hopefully doggy-day-care!) business in the near future. I want to be sure I am completely educated, prepared and covered in all aspects of the field before venturing in!

The following list is partly for my own knowledge, but also for those out there looking for pet sitters or dog walkers and are not really sure where to begin. It’s simply a helpful guide to find the best and most qualified professional pet sitters out there; the ones that take the business and your pet seriously. As with any profession, unfortunately, you will find the good, and the not so good.

Some ideas to keep in mind when searching for a pet sitter or dog walker –

1. Pet Sitter Liability Insurance works much like any other insurance. It covers accidents that may affect the client’s pets or property while the pet sitter is on an assignment.

2.  A Business License is a permit issued by the government. If the pet sitter is running a business, it should be licensed.

3. Pet Sitting Forms to be filled out prior to actual pet sitting dates. These forms allow both you and the pet sitter to be on the same page and should include the following. These forms also show that the pet sitter takes their job seriously.

  • Pet Sitting Services Client Agreement
  • Pet Sitting Assignment Form
  • Veterinary Instructions and Release Form

5. Experience: What kind of experience does the pet sitter have, how long has the pet sitter been working with animals and what type?

4. References

5. Be sure your potential sitter offers a consultation. By meeting with the sitter before any plans have been arranged, you will be able to get a better sense of their personality and determine if it will be a good fit.

A few items I did not include on the list, but are commonly used amongst pet sitters:

1. A Professional License is required in order for individuals to work in certain professions. Passing tests “ideally” show the individual knows his/her stuff. This is NOT a requirement from an individual pet sitter.

2. Bonding is ONLY appropriate for companies that hire employees. It insures the business in the event that if an employee steals from a client, the employee may be found guilty of theft, and thus the insurance will pay for stolen items. This is NOT a requirement from an individual pet sitter.

Anyone can begin a pet sitting business without formal training or licensing tests. Definitely use your best judgment when picking a pet sitter or dog walker. You will know when someone is being genuine, truly loves animals, has done their research and really understands your concerns. Your conscience is usually headed in the right direction – just be sure to listen to it!
